The field note
What we brought home.
The road around the Freetown peninsula runs past beach after beach, each one lined with coconut palms leaning out over the sand. Inland, the palms climb the hills. Everywhere you stop, someone is opening a coconut with a machete and handing it over.
Coco Gin is our love letter to Salone — as everyone in Sierra Leone calls it. Juniper for the backbone, toasted and fresh coconut for the soul. Pour it over ice, close your eyes, and you're on a quiet beach on the peninsula with nowhere else to be.
